About the Habitat Map App

In celebration of Habitat′s 500,000th and 500,001st milestone and World Habitat Day, we’ve created the Habitat Map App to encourages volunteers to tell us where they’ve built with Habitat for Humanity. Our goal is to create a dynamic representation of 35 years of Habitat volunteer experiences around the globe. Add your previous experience and tell us--what was it that made your Habitat experience memorable? Then help us spread the word by sharing with your friends and family.

About my experience Durban, South Africa, a JCWP -- it was life changing! I worked on every aspect of our brick house, from building the walls to placing the terra cotta roof tiles and even planting the trees on the last day. Not only did I fall in love, but all my teammates were from Holland and I have been to visit several times since! At the end of the last day, President Carter came by on his tour of houses and since I was the Crew Leader,working with our Team Leader at the time, I was standing right there as he surveyed our work. Glancing at me, he added "I see you have a pretty young assistant helping you!" Repositioning the paint-and-dust-covered bandanna on my head, I laughed and said "I don't know about that Mr. President!"

Why I volunteer I always wanted to go on a build and Africa seemed like the most exciting place to start. (Oddly, living in NYC it is difficult to get on a build - there are too many volunteers! - and as a teacher, the JCWP projects are always during ths school year.)
