About my experience Patrick was suppose to just be our driver, to get us to Mahalapye, then ferry us back and forth to our two building sites in his very crowded van. But he couldn't sit still. He pick up the brick when we carried the bricks, he sifted the sand as we did. He asked lots of questions.. "Why have you come? Did you really pay to come work with us?" He mixed the mortar, carried the heavy sacks of mortar mix 100 meters with the four of us that we strong enough to do so; in essence he did everything. As he observed the fun we were having together working on the house he commented, "If all Habitat teams are like this, then I want to be part of Habitat!" I asked him why he chose to work so hard when he didn't have to, he replied "I want you to have a good impression of the people of Botswana. I want you to know we are thankful you are here!" Botswana could not have given us a better Ambassador, someone who truly represented the heart and soul of a gracious and proud people. He's in our hearts, he's our brother, one of many in Botswana who touched us deeply.
Why I volunteer It centers my life as a Global citizen connected to the pains, hopes and joys of my extended caring family. It helps make me whole.
