About my experience My senior year of college, I went to Tucson, AZ with 13 other students and 2 University administrators for our spring break. We stayed in a local church and worked on a few houses in the area as well as at the HabiStore or ReStore. The 15 of us grew very close over that trip and learned so much about ourselves. One of the best parts of that trip was starting the work week off with a prayer and hearing where all the other volunteers had come from. There was a couple who had been volunteering for over ten years . They would travel once a year to a new town to help Habitat. On this trip, we also helped out with a Women's Build in town. Most of the students on this trip were young women. Talk about being empowered to do anything! We worked on the bathroom, outside painting, and trim inside the house. We were all so proud of the accomplishments of the trip and I know Tucson will stay with us forever.
Why I volunteer I had gotten very involved with Habitat while I was in college. I joined my freshman year because I had heard about the awesome experiences from older students. I stayed because I myself had amazing stories to tell. Working on a Habitat site with the homeowner and other volunteers is a wonderful feeling that is hard to describe. It's that sense of being a part of something so much bigger than you. You feel like you really are making a difference. Together we really can make a difference.
