About my experience Each year The National Cartoonists Society holds its Awards Weekend in a different city. In 2008, New Orleans was selected. The program of events for the weekend announced that on the first afternoon, cartoonists who were interested could volunteer to work on Habitat for Humanity houses for Hurricane Katrina victims. About 100 volunteered and were assigned to three houses under construction. I was on one of the homes; we mostly spent the afternoon cutting and nailing up siding. At the end of the day our buses pulled up in front of our hotel - The Ritz Carlton. We were stunned that seemingly the entire staff was waiting for us at the entrance - they burst into applause as we got off and entered the lobby. I spoke with several of them; they were genuinely touched and thankful that we would give up a day of our luxury convention weekend to do manual labor to help hurricane victims in their city. I felt a bit guilty - I wanted to get right back on the bus and go do some more work so I might feel that I had earned the gratitude I got from them.
Why I volunteer I had watched the disaster of Hurricane Katrina on TV helplessly. When this opportunity arose, it seemed a small way to help a bit.
