Lilongwe?, Malawi (June 1997)

Created by Laura Lee P.
About my experience I was part of a college group that helped build a Habitat house in rural Malawi, East Africa back in 1997. It was an amazing experience. I especially enjoyed the indigenous lunches prepared for us by the woman whose house we were building and helping carry water to make our own bricks. I tried to carry the water native-style, on my head, but of course ended up with most of the water ON me rather than in the bucket by the time I actually made it to the house from the well. We worked hard and had lots of good laughs and bonding along the way. All these years later, and I still consider all of my teammates friends, and even have managed to stay in contact with a few.
Why I volunteer I've long known of and respected the work that Habitat does around the world. With my father, grandfather, and fater-in-law all contractors, I think building is probably "in my blood" - so it's a cause I can directly relate to and appreciate.
