About the Habitat Map App

In celebration of Habitat′s 500,000th and 500,001st milestone and World Habitat Day, we’ve created the Habitat Map App to encourages volunteers to tell us where they’ve built with Habitat for Humanity. Our goal is to create a dynamic representation of 35 years of Habitat volunteer experiences around the globe. Add your previous experience and tell us--what was it that made your Habitat experience memorable? Then help us spread the word by sharing with your friends and family.

About my experience In August of 2004, I started a term as an Americorps VISTA with Wiregrass HFH in Dothan AL. I had never volunteered with Habitat before, or had any real experience building homes. It was an eye-opening and life-changing experience working with volunteers there, and watching those families we built for as they began a new chapter in their lives in their new homes. I originally intended to do this Habitat stuff for a year - but the experience was so addicting I stuck with it. Seven years later - I'm still working AND volunteering for Habitat. And now I've built homes and worked with volunteers and affiliates in several states, and in 3 other countries!

Why I volunteer I started because of an opportunity to serve through Americorps, so I could earn money to pay down my student loan while getting some on-the-job experience. Now I do it because I believe in the mission and Ive seen the benefit this organization provides for families. And once you've seen one Habitat dedication ceremony, you want to see more!
