Phnom Penh, Cambodia (August 2008)

About my experience In August of 2008 I participated in a Global Village trip to build homes for families in Phnom Penh Cambodia. Our team of 12 volunteers worked on 3 different homes - digging foundations, moving stone and brick, building columns and walls, and pouring cement floors. This was my first experience traveling to southeast asia. The area was beautiful and the people were welcoming. The poverty level was shocking though. There were so many people living in makeshift shacks, or just sleeping on the street. I felt blessed to be a part of that project, and proud to know that I had made a difference in the lives of those few families we worked with. After the build, several members of the team visited the temples at Angkor Wat. This was an amazing site to see, and a great way to wrap up our experience in Cambodia.
Why I volunteer I love the Global Village program because it gives you an opportunity to travel, to interact with Habitat partner families on a deeper level, to make lasting friendships with other team members, and to make a lasting impact in the lives of families and communities around the world.
