Unawatuna, Sri Lanka (August 2011)

Created by David M.
About my experience I recently led a team of volunteers on a Global Village trip to Unawatuna, Sri Lanka (just outside of Galle). Our team worked on 5 homes during our stay - digging foundations, moving stone, laying brick, mixing cement etc. The people were welcoming. Families were excited to meet Americans and their children all wanted to practice speaking English with us. The work was hard - and it was HOT - but we were able to accomplish quite a bit on the sites. In two weeks, we nearly finished one home and made progress on 4 others. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country to visit. I would highly recommend it as a GV destination!
Why I volunteer I love the Global Village program because it gives you an opportunity to travel, to interact with Habitat partner families on a deeper level, to make lasting friendships with other team members, and to make a lasting impact in the lives of families and communities around the world.
