Bielsko-Biala, Poland (July 2011)

About my experience Habitat for Humanity Gliwice partnered with the Blue Cross Foundation to renovate 3 properties in Bielsko-Biala. Blue Cross serves more than 2,000 clients annually through their readaptation and counseling centers for addicts and the homeless. Our Thrivent Builds Worldwide team of 20 volunteers from all over the United States had a great time experiencing Polish culture, conversing a bit in a unique language, enjoying some incredible cuisine and, of course, working alongside clients to improve 3 properties. Many of us sit at desks in our jobs, and it's always a surprise to find muscles that we haven't used in awhile! :) I learned that people halfway around the world have the same hopes and dreams as you and me, and it is so rewarding to help provide a hand up through Habitat. This was the 5th team my husband and I have co-led to Poland, and we're looking forward to going back to serve more families again in 2012!
Why I volunteer Leading Thrivent Builds Worldwide teams to another country to share in the lives of different families in a different culture is a great way for me to express my faith and be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving others. I also love how these connections help me keep my life in perspective! Interested in a Thrivent Builds trip? Check out www.thriventbuilds.com for great opportunities!
