Perquin, El Salvador (October 2010)

About my experience Fifteen people arrived in El Salvador on Oct. 8 to learn firsthand about the country’s housing issues and become advocates for the cause. The team ranged from repeat Global Village volunteers to first-time attendees with no knowledge of Habitat. Over the next week, the team: • Visited disaster response operations in the town of San Vicente, where 200 people were killed and 7,000 homes were destroyed in flooding and landslides during last year’s Hurricane Ida. Many families in the area are living in tin shacks. • Spent three days building outdoor kitchens with partner families in El Progreso. Many of the families had been cooking inside one-room homes, and the smoke and soot were causing respiratory problems in the children. • Met with representatives from government ministries, local NGOs and foreign aid programs, including the Millennium Challenge Corp., USAID and Instituto Libertad y Progreso, an organization to promote liberal democracy. They also met with FUNDASAL, a housing nonprofit working in El Salvador, to discuss its work on secure tenure and a housing bill it is proposing. • Visited other Habitat projects in Santa Ana, including a well-maintained street where Habitat families have lived for several years, a stark contrast to the tin shacks of San Vicente.
